Content Ratings

No Romance
There is no romance; Binti's relationships are familial and emerging ones with alien entities she must learn to understand.
Moderate Themes
The novella explores the cost of leaving one's culture and family for opportunity, the trauma of surviving a massacre, and the challenge of bridging profound cultural and biological difference without erasing one's own identity.
High Violence
The Meduse alien attack on the transport ship kills virtually all other passengers in a graphic and horrifying sequence that Binti witnesses and survives by hiding; the violence is brutal and sudden.
Synopsis

Binti is the first of her people—the Himba of the Namib Desert—to be accepted to the prestigious Oomza University, and defies her family's expectations to make the journey, only to survive a violent attack on her transport ship that kills everyone else aboard and leaves her as the unlikely mediator between humanity and an alien species. A short, richly imagined novella about identity, belonging, and the power of mathematics. Thoughtful, fast-paced, and culturally specific.
