Content Ratings

No Romance
There is no meaningful romance; Miller's obsession with the missing woman is more fixation and grief than romance; Holden's relationships are referenced but not developed romantically in this volume.
Moderate Themes
Themes include colonial economic exploitation of the Belt's working poor, political brinkmanship between planetary powers, and the horror of an alien intelligence repurposing human biology without regard for individual life.
High Violence
The novel includes mass casualties from the protomolecule's transformation of an entire colony, space combat with significant losses, a massacre, and body horror elements as the protomolecule reanimates and transforms human tissue.
Synopsis

In a colonized solar system on the edge of war between Earth, Mars, and the outer Belt, ship officer Jim Holden and Ceres detective Miller investigate a missing woman and a derelict ship carrying an alien protomolecule that threatens to transform life in the solar system forever. Told in alternating perspectives that blend space opera with noir detective fiction, the novel is a gripping thriller with massive stakes. The first volume of The Expanse series.
