Content Ratings

No Romance
There is no meaningful romance; survival and resistance are the novel's entire focus.
Intense Themes
The novel immerses readers in the lived reality of the Holocaust—starvation, mass murder, family separation, and the systematic dehumanization of Jewish people—with unflinching historical honesty.
High Violence
The systematic murder of Jewish civilians by Nazi forces, ghetto massacres, armed resistance combat, and the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto are depicted with historical directness; violence is sustained and emotionally devastating.
Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Chaya is a courier for the Jewish resistance in Nazi-occupied Poland, smuggling news, money, and weapons into the ghetto, and when her mission is compromised she must flee through forests and sewers toward the only chance of survival. A visceral and historically grounded novel about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. One of Nielsen's most emotionally serious works.
