No Romance
Brief references to past romantic relationships are present among the scientists; no romance is developed on-page.
Moderate Themes
The novel explores the terror of unconscious wish-fulfillment, the limitations of human psychological self-knowledge, and the hubris of assuming humanity is ready to handle unlimited power.
High Violence
The manifested fears of the sphere's visitors kill several crew members in graphic ways including massive jellyfish swarms, giant squid attacks, and explosive decompression; deaths are depicted with visceral physical detail.
Synopsis

A team of scientists descends to the ocean floor to investigate a massive spacecraft discovered buried under three hundred years of coral—and inside it, a perfect golden sphere that gives those who enter it the power to manifest their unconscious fears as lethal reality. A tense, claustrophobic psychological thriller that uses the deep ocean and alien contact to explore what the human mind would do with unlimited power. Enormously entertaining.
