Content Ratings

Moderate Romance
The novel contains references to the sexual exploitation of children in a criminal context, depicted with restraint but clear moral condemnation; adult romantic and sexual relationships appear but are not a focus.
Intense Themes
Child prostitution as part of a criminal underworld, systemic class inequality enforced by nano-technology, and the psychological impact of cultural conditioning on identity are sustained themes.
Moderate Violence
Violence includes armed conflict between neo-tribal factions, assassination, and the brutal reality of life in economically stratified nano-society; violence is present but not gratuitous.
Synopsis

In a future society of nano-engineered matter and rigid neo-Victorian tribe affiliations, a nanotechnology engineer illicitly creates a unique interactive book—the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer—intended to raise a privileged girl to think freely, but it ends up in the hands of a poor girl named Nell, whose education by the Primer shapes her extraordinary destiny. A rich, ambitious novel about education, culture, class, and the nature of intelligence. Complex and occasionally demanding but deeply rewarding.
