Mild Romance
A romantic partnership in Essun's community is present and emotionally significant; LGBTQIA+ relationships continue as a natural part of the cast; physical intimacy is handled with restraint.
Intense Themes
Sustained mother-daughter estrangement driven by violence, the institutionalized brutality of the Fulcrum system against orogene children, and the psychological cost of power used as a survival tool are central.
High Violence
Violence against orogenes by institutions and individuals, violent deaths within the survivor community, and the psychological and physical abuse Nassun endures are depicted with the series' unflinching honesty.
Synopsis

Essun and her daughter Nassun are separated across the dying world of the Stillness as the apocalyptic Fifth Season continues; Essun seeks her daughter with a community of survivors while Nassun's powers develop under the tutelage of a man whose true intentions become increasingly ominous. The second Broken Earth novel deepens both the world's mythology and the emotional devastation of its central family tragedy. A Hugo Award winner.
