Content Ratings

Mild Romance
Nickie develops an age-appropriate crush on a local boy; the affection is sweet and brief with no physical content.
Mild Themes
The novel explores how fear and religious certainty can lead communities to dangerous extremism; the suppression of music, dogs, and basic pleasures in the name of divine instruction is the primary source of tension.
No Violence
There is no meaningful violence; threat comes from the religious extremism spreading through the town and the background threat of war.
Synopsis

Set fifty years before the founding of Ember, this prequel follows Nickie, who hopes to convince her family to move to the small town of Yonwood—but discovers the town is in the grip of a local prophet's frightening visions as war threatens the outside world. A standalone prequel that explores religious extremism and the cost of uncritical belief. Weaker than the main duet but adds historical context to the series.
