Content Ratings

No Romance
There is no meaningful romance in the first installment; Will's relationships are those of apprentice and mentor.
Light Themes
Themes of finding one's unexpected path, the value of intelligence over brute strength, and the satisfaction of mastering a difficult skill under a demanding mentor are warmly handled.
Mild Violence
Training sequences, a monster encounter with the Kalkara, and Will's first real combat test create exciting adventure tension; violence is appropriate for the adventure genre.
Synopsis

Fifteen-year-old Will is disappointed not to be accepted into Battleschool after leaving the Ward, but is chosen instead by a mysterious Ranger named Halt and begins an apprenticeship in the secretive Ranger Corps, learning tracking, archery, and surveillance while Morgarath—an exiled warlord—begins to stir his forces. The opening of a rich and beloved adventure series.
